When Windows acts up, choose Restart, not Shut Down.
Windows 10 and 11 use a feature called Fast Startup. With Fast Startup on, Shut Down saves part of the system to the drive and reloads the saved copy at the next power-on. Problems stored in the saved copy come right back.
Restart skips Fast Startup. Windows loads fresh, and many glitches clear.
When to use each
- Restart: after updates, after installing software, or when the PC feels slow or buggy.
- Shut Down: at the end of the day, before moving a laptop, or before opening the case.
Restart your computer at least once a week. Many updates finish only after a restart.
